When I travel to teach, one of the most asked-about objects on my workbench is my jewelry journal. You may have seen it in person! As one of my most valuable design, technique and inspiration tools, I love showing it to students and have long dreamed of teaching my techniques for creating it. That idea finally coming to fruition with this workshop.
The versatility factor of this journal is crazy-good. Not only is it perfect as a jewelry journal but it's an ideal sketchbook, art journal, diary or artist's book.
Here's what you'll get:
I'll walk you through the creation process, step-by-step while discussing the benefits of keeping a jewelry journal and giving you some great tips on how to fill the pages.
- cover construction and embellishments
- working with fabric
- spine construction
- adding signatures
- what to include on the pages of your journal
I can't resist throwing everything-but-the-kitchen-sink into each class so, we won't be making plain-Jane journals. As a gorgeous decoration for the cover, I'm finally teaching my method for altering antique cabinet cards. We'll be using an astounding array of different mediums and techniques that will easily transfer to any collage piece.
- cabinet card prep
- paints, inks, stamping and other treatments
- collage with ephemera
- using moldable foam
I'll show you how to make the inside of your journal just as interesting and unique as the covers. I love to use a color wheel for designing so I'll be showing you how to create some easy color wheel pages. We'll also make a fabulous water color palette that you can add right into your journal, along with a place to keep your brushes and a pencil. This will come in really handy for doing quickie color studies during your design process.
In addition to my own multi-layered, in depth collage technique, you'll learn how to add color and interest to the pages quickly and easily. We'll be doing some stitching (optional if you're not a stitcher!) and several paper transfer techniques that you can use to embellish your journal or any project.
- layered collage technique
- quickie collage papers
- decorative papers
- color wheel pages
- portable color wheel palette
- adding envelopes, pockets, etc.
- stitching paper
- paper transfers
- fabric transfers
Of course, we won't leave jewlery making techniques out of this class. I'll show you how to embellish your journal with wire forms that were born from jewelry making. These embellishments can also be easily translated to other projects, including jewelry pieces.
- working with steel wire
- wire forms including leaves and flowers
- working with Ice Resin
- embellishment construction and attachment
You'll have unlimited access to my private online classroom, for the duration of the workshop, including the following:
- videos available 24/7 the entire duration of the class, beginning on day one
- complete tool and supply list (available upon registration)
- tools and supplies overviews, advice and resources
- discussion and tips on how and why to keep a jewelry journal
- questions, answers, troubleshooting with everyday access to an experienced instructor
- private social media site for group sharing
What are the advantages of an online class? No driving, no airfare, no hotels and no schlepping your heavy stuff! No waiting in line to use tools or shuffling to get a better view of the demo. You’ll have continual access to my classroom and a close up view of what's going on. Love the commraderie of being with like-minded folks? One of the most important, and enjoyable, aspects of my online classes is the private social media site I provide. You'll have the ability to post photos of your work, chat with other students, post questions and get the answers you need. Like to work in your jammies?...the videos will be at hand…a click away…any time of day or night, for you to view as many times as you want. This is a fluid, work-at-your-own-pace workshop with a friendly, classroom atmosphere.
By the end of class, not only will you have gained tons of technique experience in mixed media, collage and construction, but you'll have an indispensable, and beautiful, new design tool.

What my students have said:
Anonymous: Thank you for putting together the DREAM course in my opinion. There are so many workshop/courses out there that have either been misleading, disappointing or I realized the content was beautiful.... Your course description was like a breath of fresh air, I knew I HAD TO HAVE IT. I think I have taken enough online courses to see you are the real deal and I am very much looking forward to taking your course Thank you for your time and efforts to feel it was important enough to share yourself online.
Lori:I didn’t jump on board at first with your journal class as I’m not a drawer or painter…or didn’t think I was! You’ve opened a whole new world out there for me with all kinds of journals that I didn’t know about!! Once again, I say “thank you” for yet another wonderful class. I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to take a class in person, but I know I will always have your online classes to learn from. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!
Cathy: This class you have created was very creative. I just loved it... This class is very inspirational. And it is obvious to me that your heart and soul was put into this class. And I have to tell you that you have touched me with this. Thank you.
