I once spotted an older woman and her husband, at a carnival, just stepping off a ferris wheel. She was holding his arm, looking slim, relaxed and happy. Her grey hair was stylishly cut, her clothes were put- together...tasteful, colorful, chic and perfectly accessorized with lovely jewelry. I remember turning to my mom and saying "That's how I want to grow old!" Now I've discovered a delightful spot in the blog world, Ari Seth Cohen's Advanced Style (thank you Tracey!) And what a wonderful discovery it is. I've long valued the wisdom of those older than myself. In a group of women, the older ones are almost always the wisest, kindest and gentlest. Ari shows us something that's frequently overlooked; older women are often some of the most creative and stylish among us. You won't see any lower back tattoos or eyebrow piercings here. What you will find is quiet chic, elegance and artistry with a dash of adventure tossed in here and there.
Yes indeed...there is life after 35.
Respect your elders.

My cousin just referred me to your site.
What a gift to read encouraging words
before falling asleep. None of the ages
mentioned come close to mine (72), but I
vowed tonight to slow down and find my
uniqueness. I love bright colors. I'll start
there.

Oh goodness, and here I am in a t-shirt and workout capris.....
I hope I can be just as stylish, elegant, graceful, kind, and gentle when I get older (that is older than my current 48 years). I certainly hope to be wiser!!!

Deryn, I can't agree with you more. Sometimes I wonder if I am an old soul in a young body. But I can't say young anymore because I'm certainly in that "life over 35" crowd now too! :-) Can't wait to check out this blog. :-)

Deryn,
I am going to have to check this out. But, a few years back I decided to embrace where I was... at 55. I had colored my hair so long I didn't know what color it was(it's condition was dry & dammaged after all of this abuse). So, I grew it out. Salt & pepper yes it was. And when I couldn't stand the growing out process one more day... I cut it really short. Almost everyone said "Oh My Gosh... You look 10 years younger". That gave me the courage to continue on & NEVER color it again. And yes, I've gained weight with age but, I try to wear things that hide that as best I can. Also, to dress in my own style (yes, a bit more funky & fun than sometimes Hubby likes)...
GRACE... is a word I want to adopt with this process. I want to age/change with GRACE! I encourage us all to embrace the age/stage we are at & do it THE BEST we can. Thanks for the sweet words for a tender subject. HUGS!

Hi Deryn, Thanks for reminding me of the Advanced Style blog. A rather progressive and illuminating place for everyone to visit regardless of age.
I will soon be celebrating my 60th birthday, and am honestly looking quite forward to it. Age has liberated me. I've never been better!!
Now to dress to the nines like these fab and funky ladies.
BTW.....I loved your online class. xoxox

Amen sistah, preach it! I'm one of those who came to the things I love late in life - singing, teaching, jewellery, art, etc. Advanced Style - I -really- like that, it gives me hope that my eccentricities and quirky dressing will eventually mellow into Uniquely Me Style further down the road. 37 doesn't look quite so bad now!

I really appreciate this, thanks. I am 50 and at the beginning of what sometimes seems like the end. Although I will never be stylish I am reminded of the importance of inner beauty and wearing your "skin" well by being at peace with who you are.

Thanks for the tip!!! At 58, I'm having a bit of an identity crisis. I'm just not sure how to get dressed any more. My head tells me I'm 30. Calender... not so much.

Now that I'm back home in Bloglandia I can't wait to visit this blog. I think it's a challenge to all of us as we traverse through the road of our lives, to take the experiences and use them in a positive graceful way.
Thank you so much for keeping tabs on me while I was away. Your encouragement meant the world to me!! I have been away far to long and missed way to much of the summer!! It will take me forever to catch up with everyone.

Hi Deryn,
I still miss a dear friend who died years ago. She rejoiced in being a crone (a wise woman) in her advanced years. She was an artist, a potter, a writer and arranger of all things creative who had a marvelous way of celebrating every day -- with style.
Here's to your memory Martha!

Yes! Occasionally, I see older women who just seem to have this amazing style about them and I think the same thing-that I want to be like them!
With all the tattoo's and piercings now, the look of getting "older" is going to be a lot different. It's only as I am getting older and now that I am into my 40's that the idea of tattoo's are much more meaningful to me. I waited late in life to get them, compared to the youth today who seem to be born with one, along with a smart phone in one hand and a cup of latte in the other! Ha!
Although I REALLY do not look forward to getting wrinkles and gray hair for sure, and will rage against the idea of chopping off my hair and letting myself go, I think that the tattoos that I have will cheer me up when I am very old.
The visual landscape is changing for sure!
