Entrada Bracelet
Thank you, Amanda Krill, for giving me permission to write in my own voice. She'll give you permission too. Go take a look at her blog!
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer. I wrote short stories in grade school ("The Galloping Gourmet" about a cook who runs away), I wrote a newsletter for my secret club (so secret that I was the only member), I even wrote a poem or two (we won't talk about that!) What I came to believe is that I'm no writer. Dang!
In another life, I studied to be, and became, a legal assistant...a profession that requires, you guessed it, writing. In the process, I learned the skill of writing concisely. My writings had to be to-the-point...they had to make sense and be direct. I've since discovered that this concise form of writing is a hard thing to un-learn.
In this present life...living my dream of being an artist...the art of writing is a valuable asset. I've been blessed to have authored many articles in many different art and jewelry publications and, I've re-discovered my love of writing. Hey...I am a writer, after all! My life, in my little corner of the art world, seems to require a different writing style than my life in the legal world. In the art world, I've humbly, and a little enviously, noticed many writings; articles, stories, blog posts...with a very different style than my own. Descriptive, flowery, lengthy and...well...downright windy: words flying like leaves...expressive phrases blowing about...blustery...sometimes with a chance of showers. But that's not me. High drama is not my thing. I'm a strong believer that a picture speaks a thousand words. Cliche, I know, but so very true. I would much rather speak with my camera than my words! What Amanda helped me to remember (and what you should remember, too) is that my writings, like my jewelry creations, must come from the heart. They must be "me" first and foremost...genuine. Even if my voice is a soft breeze that never lifts one blade of grass. Soft breezes are nice too.
Are you wondering about this bracelet? It's named after Entrada Sandstone which is the type of rock found in many of the formations in Arches National Park. The color of the copper reminds me of the colors of the sandstone, the sky and the desert we saw in the Park when we took this trip. Things to come....look for this bracelet in class form...

Beautiful - I would love to take a class and learn how to make this!Deanna

Beautifully said - glad you decided you are a writer. The braclet is drop dead gorgeous. Can't wait to see more about it.

I think one of the most powerful words is "permission". So many times people are held back from achieving their full potential or doing what they want because they just don't give themselves permission. But when we say "YES" we open ourselves up to so much!

That is a gorgeous bracelet! And I always enjoy your articles which I find in various publications.

This is gorgeous Deryn! And more importantly yes, finding your voice is always the important thing. I don't write. Much. It's what the heart says after all, and who says photography isn't writing with pictures? :)

May your voice be a soft breeze - it is heard. It is heard in your writing, in your photos and in your jewerly. That bracelet is stunning. Love the heat patina of the copper - it goes so well with the turquoise!

Wonderful post. Dear whispery gossamer girl that you are...with the iridescent colours of the ages on your shoulders...and your wrists!

I'm not much for flowery prose either - I can't sigh over blown clouds or wax poetic over a filled cup of coffee.
My sky is just plain "blue" and the day is either hot or cold :-)
Enjoy your own voice!

I hear you on this, Deryn. I just finished a great class called Blogging Your Way by Holly Becker of Decor8, and we went over and over how important it is to use your own voice on your blog. I went to college and took a degree in technical writing (quite dry, like legal) but since I have been making jewelry, it has led me to another flirt, and that is photography. Pictures do communicate in an instant what words most times fail to do. BTW, I really like it when you share your introspective thoughts about creativity here...you have a marvelous voice!

I so identify with your post...I too prefer photos to words. But I have to say, I've noticed your beautiful way with words long ago. I gathered you were a writer, it is plain to see (or read!). You have a very elegant way of expressing yourself, like none other.
